Play the Sad Trombone – Griffs 1 Rivermen 2

The last-place Rivermen held off the Griffins in an uninspiring 2-1 game at Van Andel Arena.  The Griffs failed to reclaim first place in the Midwest and will get another crack at it Friday night in Chicago against the Wolves.

Grand Rapids had their chances in this one.  They outshot Peoria 29-23 and had four power plays (none of which they converted on).  Riley Sheahan was the Griffs' sole goal-scorer, tallying an unassisted shorthanded goal midway through the second.  That's an encouraging sign. The troubled center has three points in his last two games, and his on-ice success could be pivotal in the team's fortunes.

Elsewhere, Joakim Andersson and Brendan  Smith were both pointless (obviously) and recorded two shots apiece on Peoria netminder Mike McKenna.  Tomas Jurco and Gustav Nyquist were both -1, and although Tomas Tatar took five shots, he couldn't find the back of the net.  Goalie Petr Mrazek was very good in the loss, stopping 21 of the 23 shots he faced.

As mentioned earlier, next game is at Rosemont Horizon (or Allstate Arena if you're picky about that) Friday night against the Wolves.  Preview should be up Friday morning.  Go Griffs!
