To the surprise of no one, Zetterberg is the new captain of the Detroit Red Wings. Hank is now the 3rd Red Wing to wear the C since 1986. Pretty remarkable to think that since that time, there have been 5 U.S. presidents but only 3 Red Wings have worn the C.
From the Red Wings Twitter feed: "It means a lot being a captain and being the captain of this organization. Looking at the guys who have worn the C, it's a pretty special group."
More after the jump:
Zetterberg really is the perfect choice for the job. He's another guy that will lead by example on both ends of the ice. He'll shut down the other teams best forward, score a hat trick, block a shot or take a hit to kill an extra 5 seconds of a penalty. Hank doesn't make excuses for losses. After the Weber incident last season, he played it off and focuses on the next game.
Z didn't get the C by default, either. He earned it. He earned it in 2006, too, but there was a better man for the job then. Lidstrom deserved the C back then, but there was a little bit of a buzz at the time with people wondering if the Wings should go with the younger Zetterberg.
But his time is now and he'll have his work cut out for him.
