Return of #41

The Red Wings recalled small forward and Michigan native, Chris Conner last night from Grand Rapids.  Conner had been sent to the Griffins on Monday.

For those of you who don’t know…the drive from Grand Rapids to Detroit is NOT that big of a deal so don’t feel bad for the little guy.  I’m sure he’s more than happy to take the drive back down I96…even more so when he gets past Fowerville, Webberville and the rest of the “Villes”.

So far this season, Conner has added a goal and two assists in only six games.  When he was sat down by the team in mid December, he was actually riding a three game point streak…

December 8th @ Phoenix: 1 assist
December 10th @ Winnipeg: 1 goal
December 13th @ Pittsburgh 1 assist

Conner has proved in the past that he can be a solid (relatively speaking at 5’8 and a liberal 180 lbs) role player.

Make the jump to see who went down to make this recall happen.

Joakim Andersson is the unlucky fellow who was sent back to the Griffs.  The 22 year old Swede was held pointless through his four games with the big club this season.  But at 6’2 and not even breaking the two hundo mark on the scale…I have moderately high hopes for this kid.  Andersson was the Wings third round draft pick back in 2007.

The toast of the rookie line thus far has been far and away Gustav Nyquist.  Though he’s only registered one point (an assist on Cory Emmerton’s garbage goal in Dallas)…he’s shown some flashes of brilliance.  Another 22 year old from Sweden, this kid was a finalist for the Hobey Baker twice at the University of Maine…the alma mater of one Jimmy Howard.

Meet Gustav Nyquist:

That guy through him some hardballs, eh?  I find it so interesting that our fair haired, soft spoken Swedes listen to the same crap that you’d find on Snooki’s iPod…got I hate that broad.

And did you hear that bit on VERSUS NBC Sports Network about how Nyquist’s dad was a student of Justin Abdelkader’s father at Reese Puffer High School?  He was an exchange student at the time…small world, eh?

Anyway, looking for your thoughts on the Conner recall and what you think of young Gustav Nyquist so far.  Andersson was by no means a liability out there on the ice, but I think he needs a good deal of time to grow into his body and develop his skill.  I’m sure we’ll be seeing him again, but Michigan Tech alum Chris Conner has proved he’s race-ready for the big leagues and thus – I’m fine with the move.

Your thoughts?
