Sigh…that was a frustrating game. It certainly looked like it was going to be a penalty-fest in the first period – much like it had been in the second round of last year’s play-offs. But after we tuned up Logan Couture’s face a couple times, and Happy gave someone a hug, the refs pretty much put the whistle away. NHL on the Fly this morning didn’t even mention the Wings killing off a full two minutes of five on three. The boys in the studio only commented that San Jose “came out on their toes rather than their heels”.
Um…guys, the Red Wings were outshooting the Sharks 9-1 before the penalties starting raining down. I have no doubt in my mind that if Detroit had kept the pace before that first penalty, that we would have buried McClellan’s little minnows. But it just wasn’t to be. The Wings continued to battle back, but late goals in both the first period and the second period made it difficult to carry any momentum from period to period.
This game certainly wasn’t Howard’s fault, who stopped 39 of 43 shots. The team didn’t necessarily play all that bad…if that shot hadn’t hit Ryan Clowe’s pad, and if Dirty Bert had lifted Setoguchi’s stick instead of trying to kill him (we know he couldn’t resist)…who knows what would have happened.
All we can do is move on and get ready for tomorrow’s game against the Stars.
