So I know Detroit plays St. Louis Los Angeles tonight, and my day is looking pretty crazy as of right now so posting may be rare before game time…but I have to post this news.
The highly-anticipated five-year contract extension for Chicago defenseman Brent Seabrook became official Sunday afternoon.
Seabrook, whose deal is reportedly worth $29 million, joins Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith, Niklas Hjalmarsson, Marian Hossa, Brian Campbell and David Bolland as the team’s core players under contract through at least the 2013-14 season. Patrick Sharp still has one year left on his four-year contract that he signed in 2008.
This all from NHL.com. But here is the best part…
With Seabrook’s $5.8 million annual salary, the Blackhawks have roughly $48 million tied into 11 players for the 2011-12 season. As of Sunday afternoon, they remained one point out of eighth in the Western Conference with 21 games to play this season.
Oh boy. And here I was giving Stan Bowman all this credit…saying that he was cleaning up the messes of past mis-management. But now he’s making all new messes of his own. So Stan is looking at his ninth place team right now and says to himself “hmmm…I like this team, I think I’ll sign a Dale Tallon-like contract that will prevent me from doing anything except replacing some of these players with weaker ones”.
“Do you know the meaning of the word depth, Chicago?”
“Of course we know the meaning of the word core.”
“No, I said depth, Chicago.”
Good luck in the off-season. At least right now you’re looking like there’s going to be a lot of time to try and figure this mess out. It’s going to be another interesting summer for little brother…and without a Cup to help console them.
***updated 8:30 AM EST…I knew we were playing LA…but my thoughts merged with my planned next post…it was 5 AM for me when I wrote that, guys***
