All About the Kids

mursakplayerpic1“I’m pretty comfortable right now,” Mursak said. “I don’t worry about things anymore. I just play the system. I want to take care of our defensive zone, that’s where I have still some room to improve.  I just want to keep skating and grinding their (defense). That’s what they want from me. Every game is better, and hopefully it goes that way.” –Jan Mursak

That quote was taken by Khan(!) this morning.  Mursak, the 22 year old from Slovenia has -2 rating after his first eight games.  But has played well notched his first NHL goal against Colorado on Monday.  Tomas Tatar – who has identical stats as Mursak (1 G, 0 A) has been sent back down to Grand Rapids and Coach Babcock says that though Tatar does have a certain skill set, he still has some work before he can hang with the big club:

“He’s got a skill set, he’s real intelligent, he’s good with the puck, he’s strong on the puck.  He’s going to have to put more pace in his game. When he gets the puck he’s going too slow right now. But that’s all part of becoming a good pro and playing at this level.  He’s going to play in this league for sure. Just how good a player he’s going to be has yet to be determined. He’s got lots of time to get better.” –Mike Babcock

Tatars (Precious) is only 20 years old – arguably the youngest rising star to rise through the ranks of Detroit’s system since Jiri Fischer…who was making the big squad before he was 21.  Don’t worry, folks – we’ll be seeing little Tatar again somewhere down the road.

Meanwhile, the NHL leader in wins is ready to take on the workload without Chris Osgood backing him up.  Ozzie went under the knife and had successful sports hernia surgery, but will still be out 6-8 weeks.howardplayerpic

“I’m prepared. I know what it takes.  You never get too high, you never get too low on yourself. You just got to keep at that fine line and keep going.”–Jimmy Howard

Remember, Jimmy started 28 of the final 29 games last season – and that seemed to work out just fine.  Jimmy had a rough outing last game, but he’s proved that he can perform when the pressure is on.
