Welcome to August

The summer is already starting to wind down…slowly.

Throughout the month of August, we will lose about one hour and fifteen minutes of daylight.  But though the days might be getting a little darker sooner – the hockey horizon will continue to get a little brighter.  Here are a trio coming attractions for the eighth month of the year:

  • Niemi’s fate in Chicago will be decided
  • Modano will finally make up his mind
  • Helm and Abdelkader will sign their new contracts

The arbitrator awarded Antti Niemi a one-year, $2.75 million Cap hit contract – which is actually more fair to Chicago than I would have preferred.  The chubby Finnish goalie was looking for somewhere between $3-4 million…but I don’t really think there was any chance of that happening.  Still, Chicago is totally screwed if they plan on keeping Niemi and a guy like Patrick Sharp.  Where they go from here depends on if anyone out there is looking to pick up Niemi’s contract.  Apparently, we’ll find out today if Stan Bowman will walk away from the contract.

Ah, Mikey-Mo…the entire reason that Chris Hollis shut down Motown Wings.  We still have a +$1 million carrot dangling in front of the potential third line center’s nose.  And what was supposed to be a quick decision, will FINALLY be made sometime this week (hopefully).  The 40 year old will hit the ice and decided whether or not he wants to take one more crack at the Cup.  If Mo2Motown actually comes to fruition – our lineup will be completely stacked:

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Holmstrom
Bertuzzi-Filppula-Franzen
Cleary-Modano-Hudler
Helm-Abdelkader-Eaves

Lidstrom-Rafalski
Kronwall-Stuart
Ericsson-Kindl

Howard
Osgood

Without Modano, our lineup will still be awesome:

Zetterberg-Datsyuk-Holmstrom
Bertuzzi-Filppula-Franzen
Cleary-Abdelkader-Hudler
Draper-Helm-Eaves

Lidstrom-Rafalski
Kronwall-Stuart
Ericsson-Kindl

Howard
Osgood

Also – if Modano doesn’t sign, Jakub Kindl may be replaced in that lineup by a D-man that we will offer Modano-type money to.  Either way, Detroit’s roster is looking is solid.

The Modano signing also impacts Abdelkader and Helm’s contracts.  Kenny is looking to go long-term.  But it Mo comes to Motown, they may just sign through next season and look for their long-term deals after this season.  Regardless, #8 and #43 will be Red Wings for a very long, long time.
