The Detroit Red Wings apparently have signed 28-year-old Finnish free-agent forward Ilari Filppula, the older brother of Valtteri Filppula.
The source that Khan(!) sites? Capgeek.com…the same place I told you to go to play around with the roster. The evidence is really starting to pile up…
The elder Filppula (5-foot-11, 191) has played his entire pro career in the Finnish League. He won the Jari Kurri Trophy as playoff MVP this season, helping TPS Turku win the championship by picking up two goals and 12 assists in 15 playoff games. He had 12 goals and 37 assists for a team-high 49 points in 58 regular season games.
Good luck trying to tell these two apart.
It actually looks like Ilari’s eyebrows are a little more in-tune with his hair color…a big talking point when it comes to little brother, Val. The SM-liiga league that he was playing in is the exact same league that Ville Leino was plucked from. Leino and Ilari both played for Helsinki Jokerit…though not at the same time.
Big brother Filppula had 188 points in 375 games played in the Finnish League SM-liiga.
Fathers, lock up your daughters…we now have two Filppulas.
