The Detroit Red Wings today signed forward Mitchell Callahan to a three-year entry-level contract. Per team policy, additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Callahan, 18, was Detroit’s sixth-round draft pick (180th overall) in the 2009 NHL draft. The Whittier, Calif., native spent the past two seasons playing right wing for the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL. In 2009-10, he posted 47 points (20-27-47) in 72 games while registering 165 penalty minutes.
The right-handed shooter is listed at 5-feet-11 and 175 pounds.
Hit the weights, kid. Add him to the list of youngsters that include Brendan Smith and Tomas Tatar that could have a shot at making some noise at the AHL level. He has the Valterri Filppula hair style, however, in order to get the full effect, he’ll have to dye his eyebrows blonde.
I know it’s the WHL, but 165 PIM’s in 72 games seems like a lot, doesn’t it? A gritty forward at a meager stature? This kid could be ready to go once Dan Cleary’s body starts giving out…which hopefully doesn’t happen for another few years.
